I could also use another chance at a game reserve, since my only sighting of the Big Five was a whole bunch of elephant butts and specks in the distance. We caught monkeys trying to break into our car and an ostrich ate our tennis ball, so obviously they’re blacklisted. I did fall madly in love with Kudu and Zebra - which are totally commonplace and made me very uncool among the South Africans. But Whatever.
Either way, Ithala was magical place and the excitement of searching the open spaces and among the trees hoping to find a leopard, rhino, anything, is incomparable.
I think I might actually love my new job. Although I would still prefer to be in the vineyards of Stellenbosch.
Tomorrow is my first day as a third grade teacher with my very own classroom. Although so far teaching in Taiwan has been more stressful than fun, I’m feeling optimistic about a new school and new students. When I was first offered the job, I daydreamed about presenting myself like the 1950s teacher pictured above…I realize after three weeks of traveling and only a day and a half to prepare that it’s not really a possibility. Gosh darn it.
In six hours I’ll be on a flight to Johannesburg. South Africa has always been very high on my “OMG I want to go there!” list, so I’ve been looking forward to this trip for a pretty long time.
But, since this trip is also about Meeting the Parents, the pre-trip emotional freakouts are even more intense than usual. If Andrew were slightly less patient, he would leave me behind.
Expect plenty of updates in the next 25 days with (if I’m lucky) too many pictures of the Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard), Capetown and Pietermaritzburg. EEEEK!
